divestment

Divestment petitions and letters signed at the Rock to Save Darfur Event on April 19th, along with subsequents events that Rock to Save Darfur produced or partnered with such as ‘‘Where's Darfur’’ at the Knitting Factory on April 23rd and the Save Darfur Global Day for Darfur Rally in Washington Square Park on April 29th, helped prompt the enactment of the New York State targeted divestment from Sudan legislation. The Chinese government props up the genocidal regime in Sudan with oil revenue generated by Petrochina and Sinopec. As of the last sec filing period, Fidelity owned $1.3 Billion of stock in Petrochina. Divest from Fidelity until they divest from Sudan. In the memory of 400,000 who have died, we want 400,000 people to complain to Fidelity. Fittingly, this campaign began on International Holocaust Remembrance Day.

Solar Cookers: Benefits Of Solar Cooking

  • Solar cooking can reduce the need for fuel, wood and frequent firewood collection thereby reducing the risk of gender-based violence towards women and girls associated with firewood collection.
  • There is no fire or smoke and therefore less air pollution.
  • Without a fire, solar cooking is healthier for the cook because of less smoke inhalation and eye irritation.
  • Solar energy is free and almost always present (.3’’ rainfall in 2004).
  • Not needing to tend a fire, women are free to do other needed work.
  • This provides income generation opportunities for female refugees.

    The Cookit Solar Cooker

  • The CooKit is a simple solar cooker that converts sunlight into heat to cook food.
  • It is easy to manufacture because it is made of just cardboard and aluminum foil and can be hand-assembled.
  • It is light and small when folded and very inexpensive.
  • One CooKit can save one ton of wood each year.
  • It has been successfully used in several refugee camps in Kenya and Ethiopia and now in Chad.
  • After completing a 5-day training, women in the Iridimi camp receive two solar cookers (one for rice or other grain/starch and the other for sauce or vegetables).
  • Some women assemble solar cookers in a workshop to earn income.
